Dupont Circle, Washington DC Real Estate Overview
Dupont Circle, an eclectic and cosmopolitan neighborhood located in northwest Washington DC, has a rich development history primarily after the civil war. The neighborhood is roughly outlined north by Florida Ave NW, east by 16th St. NW, south by M St. NW, and west by 22nd St. NW. The traffic circle and park, near the neighborhood center, was memorialized by Congress as Dupont Circle in 1882 to honor Samuel Francis DuPont, who served with distinction for the U.S. Navy during Civil War times. The park is beautifully maintained by the National Park Service and has been an oasis for local residents and visitors the world over. The DuPont Memorial Fountain, designed by Henry Bacon and Daniel Chester French embodies the Sea, Wind, and Sky on its statues, and has remained the park’s centerpiece since 1921.
The neighborhood and Historic Districts of Dupont Circle are rich in architecture. Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque revival-styled rowhouses were primarily built around the turn of 20th century. This was also the time when grandiose mansions and palatial homes were located on the circle. One example and the only one still standing today is the Patterson Mansion, which has famously housed President Calvin Coolidge and hosted dignitaries like Charles Lindbergh after his inaugural transatlantic flight. Another historic district is the Strivers’ Section, which still has many original Edwardian-period dwellings.
There are many famous landmarks and institutions that contribute to the diverse character and worldly feel of Dupont Circle to explore. One can find many embassies, historical landmarks, and prominent institutions. Our country’s first museum of modern art (the Phillips Collection), the Dumbarton Bridge, and The Mansion on O Street are just a few of the famous landmarks. Many influential minds throughout the world are concentrated in prestigious institutions that are based in Dupont Circle: the Brookings Institution, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Center for Global Development, and several others. The Original Founding Church of Scientology is rooted there as well. Whatever your interests, there are ample opportunities to delve into this diverse and forward thinking community.
