Fairfax Schools
We mentioned that Fairfax has some of the best schools in the country, an important consideration for any current and future parents. Fairfax County Public Schools serve more than 178,000 students in nearly 200 different institutions. Students in these schools speak more than 200 languages, and the district is incredibly diverse.
Almost 95 percent of Fairfax students graduate on time, and more than 92 percent plan to continue their education past high school. The district also offers Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs, including classes in elementary and middle school. Three high schools in the district (Thomas Jefferson High, Langley High, and West Springfield High) have also won Gold College Success Awards.
Impact of COVID-19
Like everywhere else, Fairfax, Virginia, has seen a lot of changes in the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 1,000 people died of the virus in Fairfax County, and nearly 93,000 cases were documented. Businesses and schools moved to a remote footing as the city worked to keep infection rates down.
However, Fairfax is doing an amazing job of recovering from the pandemic and moving back towards normal life. As of this writing, 84 percent of the adult population is fully vaccinated, and 76 percent of people ages 12 to 17 are fully vaccinated. Fairfax County Public Schools are also reliving history by launching a campaign to vaccinate 5- to 11-year-olds in the same school where polio vaccine field trials began in 1954.
